WHAT IS PSYCHOMETRIC TEST?

A psychometric test helps employers examine candidates' capabilities and preferences by providing data that enables the employer to assess whether a candidate is suitable for the role within the organization or not. Psychometric tests involve a series of questions, that a candidate answers.

Psychological based tests are the tools to assess people to measure psychological attributes such as personality and intelligence. In the past century, such type of tests has played an increasingly important part in revolutionizing how we approach different fields such as education, psychiatry, and corporate recruitments.

Due to its accuracy and objectivity, it has become very popular in recruitment process in corporates.

However, getting the best results out of psychometric tests requires a concrete understanding of-

How to prepare for Psychometric or personality test- introduction and tips

Human Psychology is very uncertain, and it changes as per the situation. But the basic psychology of any person is actually the result of the environment and surroundings like family, friends, education and all other aspects of life during his upbringing.

In companies these aspects are used as a tool for determining fitment of the candidature pertaining to a particular job, responsibility and role.

Now a days it has become significant in recruitment & selection process. These tests help employers to assess a candidate's suitability for a role by measuring their abilities and traits.

Aptitude Test

This type of tests helps to figure out and assess a specific or general set of skills depending on the job. They may include questions from various categories, such as

·        Inductive Reasoning

·        Error Checking

·        Logical reasoning

·        Diagrammatic Reasoning

Skill Test

Employers can gauge the time it takes for the candidate learn a new skill. It comprises aptitude and ability tests. This assesses candidates problem-solving skills and determines trainability and ability to perform new tasks using the skills.

Personality Test

Corporates use personality tests to gauge whether a candidate fits the company and its culture or not. These tests are indication of your attitude, motivation and how you prefer to accomplish specific tasks. There are no right or wrong answers. It just shows your personality traits, and your answer might show that you have a particular personality type.

How to deal with Psychometric Tests?

Psychometric tests contain multiple-choice questions and has specified limited time for each question and to complete the test.

Since sometime these questions are quite confusing and challenging, employers do not usually expect candidates to answer all of them. So even if you are not able to answer all the question, its ok!

If you are having any reservation or limitation that might affect your test performance, such as test anxiety or a hearing impairment, you should well inform to the recruiter for suitable arrangements.

Depending on the recruiter, you might encounter a psychometric test at the very start of the interview process and at any stage of the process.

The questions and difficulty level might be different for different positions.

 SITUATION REACTION TEST (SRT) 

The situation reaction test is technique for evaluating a one’s reactions to day-to-day events. This test is used to see if a candidate has the courage and intellectuality to deal with unusual circumstances.  The test highlights traits such- following a logical path, clear thinking and making quick decisions. It also tests the capacity of candidate to handle stress or hardship without losing their temper.

What is the Procedure of the Situation Reaction Test (SRT)? 

A booklet containing 60 real-life scenarios with response time of 30 minutes. In 30 minutes, a candidate has to respond to each of the 60 scenarios. Each case requires a candidate to write only 2 or 3 lines in reply. As a result, a quick reaction within the specified time limit is critical.

Situation Reaction Test Tips

·        Response should be proportional to your capacity and ability. No lie please.

·        Observe and consider actions that seem to be simple but also obvious.

·        Consider rescuing a human life first, then an animal’s life or finally, resources. 

·        Candidates must be able to respond to a variety of situations.

·        There are no easy or complex circumstances.

Don’ts for Situation Reaction Test

·        Do not write answers to situations that you do not comprehend or are unfamiliar.

·        Avoid making a quick decision.

·        No grammatical or spelling errors.

·        Do not skip, it gives the impression that you’re attempting to avoid it or that you’re indecisive.

·     Remember that you are being evaluated on your ability to assess a scenario rather than on correct or incorrect answers.

·        The quality of the reply isn’t as important as the quality of the answer, but that doesn’t mean you can think more and write less.

Sample Situation Reaction Test Question (Probable answers are in BOLD)

One day, while travelling, it arrives at your desired stop, but you have been unable to purchase a ticket due to the high traffic. What are your plans?

·        Call the conductor and give him the money to receive the ticket.

·        Hand the money to a passenger next to you and instruct them to give it over to the conductor.

·        Give the money for the ticket to the driver.

One day, you realize that your sister’s marriage has been finalized, but she is unhappy because the person she is married to is not her first choice. You’ll… 

·        Understand the problem, chat with your parents, educate them of his sister’s decision, educate them on the implications of a bad marriage and marry her according to her preferences.

·        Talk to your sister about it and attempt to convince her.
